Marketing Music on YouTube: Free Music Promotion with Videos

Looking for a free way to start marketing music? Have you considered video sites like Youtube yet? If not, what are you waiting for? Everyone should have either a web cam or digital camcorder. If you don’t, go pick up a cheap web cam for $30 at Walmart or Best Buy. With today’s technology it’s pretty easy to create your own music videos, which could have a significant impact on your marketing efforts . In fact, you can create some pretty professional looking movies (with special effects and all) with some of the free video editing software that is available online. Or, if producing a music video isn’t your thing, you could create a simple movie clip of yourself rapping or singing in front of your camera. Either way, as long as you’ve got talent people will watch it and pass it along to their friends. Before you know it you could rack up 5000 views. A couple months later you’re up to 30,000 views just like that. Now that’s what I call free music promotion! If people really like what they see, your video could become super viral and reach into the millions like the videos I’ve posted below. The key here is to be original.

Now you are probably wondering how all of this free self-promotion can benefit you. How am I going to make money?

Well, it’s easier then you may think. First, you should have a Myspace page or Website that you can send people to. Secondly, provide an easy way for people to purchase your CDs or digital downloads or anything else you want to sell. Almost everyone has a paypal account so make sure you offer that as a payment option. Thirdly, set up a clean looking USER page on Youtube that links out to your Website or Myspace page. Finally, make sure you mention your Website at the End of the video. I also suggest that you display the web address along the top of the video clip while it is playing. This can easily be done with some of the free video editing software available online.

If your music video connects with its audience you can expect that a good percentage of viewers will check out your site. Here’s a music marketing tip, if you want to increase the percentage of viewers that make it to your website, at the very end of the video clip consider including a 15 second “funny rap” personally inviting people to stop by your site.

One more thing, if your first video flops don’t stop there. You may find that it takes a few tries before you create a winner.
